Abstract
The work aims to show that the V–VI centuries Greek philosophy on language elaborated the two very different notions of “language”, “epistemic ordinary language” and “logical language”. Pyrrhonian skep- ticism used the appeal to language (speech, use of words) to contrast the philosophy of language of the Sophists, which attributed an epistemic role to ordinary language; and the logical language constructed by dog- matists, based on the epistemological criterion of determinacy, known as “semantic univocity”, and which must not be confused with ordinary language.
