Abstract
At the end of the 1990s Ulrich Beck defined globalization as «the processes through sovereign national states are crisscrossed and undermined by transformational actors with varying prospects of power, orientations, identities and networks». His words highlight the capacity of non-state actors to impact on states’ action, thus generating mechanisms of transnational governance and vehiculating the idea that nation-state has exhausted its raison d’être. From this perspective, this work analyzes the evolution of nation-states over the time and discusses their role in the current global political scenario.
