Abstract
In what follows, I discuss the sociolinguistic situation of the Pa-
niya, one of the indigenous communities in the Nilgiris of Tamil
Nadu. In particular, I highlight the vanishing aspects in the life
of the Paniya. The paper is organized in three sections. The first
section provides a glimpse of the current language situation in
India. The second section briefly introduces the indigenous peo-
ple of India along with the specific area where they can be found,
with a focus on the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Finally, the third
section focuses on data collected among the Paniya of Tamil Nadu
during two short field surveys I carried out some time ago.
