Abstract
Cistus genus is present in Sardinia with populations of C. monspeliensis, C. salvifolius, C. creticus subsp. eriocephalus, C. albidus, C. creticus subsp. creticus and C. creticus subsp. corsicus. No chemical studies are currently being carried on Cistus species of Sardinia. The aim of this research is to characterize the secondary metabolites in extracts of different species of Cistus in Sardinia and to evaluate antimicrobial activity. The plants were extracted using hydro-distillation and several traditional solvents and were characterized using GC/MS, HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS and CL-UHPSM/ SM. Antimicrobial activity was determined as MIC by using an agar macrodilution method. The essential oils have shown six different characteristic profiles. The profiles of the three C. creticus subspecies are similar, even if the relative percentage are quite different. The analysis of the seven essential oils of C. c. eriocephalus show interesting characteristics and they would divided in groups with different metabolic profiles. Among solvent extracts the obtained results allowed the detection of several phenolic compounds. They are characterized by a hight percentage of rosmarinic acid derivatives and of quercitin derivatives. C. salvifolius is quantitatively most rich of phenolic compounds. The extracts exhibited any differences in their antimicrobial activities: Grampositive bacteria are more sensitive to the Cistus extracts. Any noticeable action has been found against Candida species.
