Abstract
The paper examines the evolution of the Italian trade union press from the divisions of 1948-1949
to the end of the Fifties, describing and comparing the events concerning the press of the three
largest trade unions, Cgil, Cisl and Uil, to understand their different points of view and the way in
which the unions announced themselves, their principles and objectives during the decade and the
role played by newspapers in the definition of union information. The first three chapters consider
the press and propaganda policies of individual organizations and their journalistic production at a
national level (review, newspapers and magazines), looking at codes and models and relating them
to changes in the communicative context of Italy in the Fifties. The fourth chapter focuses instead
on the reading of the press of the associations of construction workers (Filca-Cisl and Fillea-Cgil),
to highlight how the federal experience can be inserted in the union press of the period and how the
press of the building federations had a particularity of its own, but tried to express the essential
features of the models union followed.
