Abstract
The use of native grass species for the construction of turfgrass is a choice related to environmental
sustainability and can contribute to the aesthetic value of urban-landscape, peri-urban and marginal
areas. However, the lack of seed companies that take into account the genetic identity and
geographical distribution of the plant material, at least in Italy, and the often limited knowledge
about the ecology of germination, phenology and techniques of cultivation of native plants,
represent a limit to their use. The following study on the evaluation of the agronomic potential of 14
plant species found in Latium (Central Italy), aims to achieve that goal. For each taxon seed
germination at 3 different temperatures (15° C, 20° C and 25° C) in darkness and with photoperiod
of 12 hours, subjecting the seed to pre-treatment, was assessed. Field cultivation trials were
undertaken in the absence of irrigation, fertilization and pesticide treatments, which also allowed to
define the phenology of each taxon and collect the main morphometric characters of the plant. The
dormant seeds immediately after harvest, in general showed a positive response to pre-treatment, in
particular the use of GA3, KNO3 and vernalization. Most of the species showed a photo-dependent
germination, higher at 15° C compared to the other tested temperatures. Plant flowering was
ornamentally valuable, progressive and different in duration depending on the species. Within two
years of cultivation all species tested showed a high tolerance to water stress, required neither
fertilization nor pesticide treatments. According to the results obtained so far the species tested
result suitable for the purpose set by the research programme.
