Abstract
The article, included in a volume dedicated to the relations of the Barberini family and Europe, analyzes the figure of Cardinal Francesco Barberini and his political efforts for the election of his nephew, Rinaldo d'Este, as King of Poland in 1674.
The article traces all the intense phases of the Polish interregnum, focusing on the attempts, then failed, made by the cardinal in favour of Rinaldo: a study that emerges from the unpublished reading of the Roman cardinal's correspondence, now kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library.
