Abstract
The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains is a challenging problem that has led to an urgent global call for new antimicrobial drugs. The use of natural immunostimulants such as herbal extracts and beta-glucans in aquaculture may offer novel approaches in the treatment of a variety of fish diseases. Such natural compounds, potentially devoid of undesirable side-effects, can represent a new strategy to control the great economic losses that can affect the productivity of fish farming.
Firstly, we studied the pharmacological potential of leaf components of Myrtus communis and Aloe arborescens deserving special interest to their immunomodulatory effects on a poly I:C or LPS-stimulated S. aurata fibroblast cell line (SAF-1). Furthermore, the ethanolic extracts from the two plant species were assayed in vitro for their antimicrobial effects on Listonella (Vibrio) anguillarum and Photobacterium damselae ssp. piscicida strains. These Gram negative bacteria are two major pathogens for a wide range of cultured fishes, being the causative agents of vibriosis and pasteurellosis, respectively.
Secondly, we investigated the modulatory effects of beta-glucans (Macrogard) on the proteomic profile of a primary cell culture isolated from the atlantic salmon and cod gills.
Obtained results have provided a promising new perspective for the use of natural compounds to prevent or oppose viral and bacterial diseases in fish.
