Abstract
The essay analyzes the role of Labour governments in shaping a new politics of citizenship and race in post-imperial Britain. The Commonwealth Immigrants Act of 1968 marked a decisive moment in this process: the redefinition of the boundaries of the national community brought an end to imperial universalism and inaugurated selective belonging. The law was the product of an interplay among the pursuit of political consensus, the colonial legacy, and the administrative
management of ethnic differences.
