Abstract
Through a comparative analysis of The Tempest and Heart of Darkness, the essay investigates the dynamic that drives human beings to dominate one another in order to assert their individuality. Throughout history, attempts have been made to curb this feral component through cultural and social constructs. However, due to their artificial nature, these ethical frameworks remain vulnerable to atavistic impulses of self-assertion, which are always poised to resurface in certain contexts.
