“In mare et in terra”: la Lega Santa del 1684 e la diplomazia pontificia

Abstract
In the aftermath of the Liberation of Vienna by the army commanded by Jan III Sobieski, international diplomacy was activated immediately to extend the Polish-Imperial League and continue the war against the Turkish. The diplomacy of the Holy See, planned by Innocent XI, was particularly active: Francesco Buonvisi, ordinary nuncio in Vienna, and Opizio Pallavicini, nuncio in Warsaw, worked hard to encourage the adhesion of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. With the signing of the treaty on March 6, 1684 between Warsaw, Vienna, and Venice—solemnly celebrated in Rome on the following May 24— Innocent XI could count on joint action against the infidels by land and sea, with the armies of Poland, of the Empire, and the naval fleet of the Serenissima.
The article intends to retrace the diplomatic phases—not always an easy task—which led to the signing of the League, paying attention to the decisive role played by the diplomacy of the Holy See.

Alessandro Boccolini is a researcher in Modern History at the University of Tuscia where he teaches Eastern European History in the Political Sciences and International Relations degree (L-36). He obtained a Ph.D. in "History and Culture of travel and of travel literature in Modern History". Research fellow for the Institute of Italian Culture in Stockholm and the Clerici Foundation, he held his postdoctoral at the Dalarna University in Falun (Sweden) with a project entitled "Italian travelers in Sweden during the Modern Age". During the academic year, 2019/20 is Visiting Research and Visiting Professor for the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. His research is focalized on the theme of papal diplomacy during the modern age, with specific attention to the role of the papal nuncio in Central and Eastern Europe. He also conducts research about the history of travel and Italian travelers in Europe. He is a member of CESPoM (Center Study on the Sobieski Age and Modern Poland) the director of Eastern European History Review (Annually Historical Journal) ISSN 2612-0402. He is an ordinary member of C.I.R.V.I (Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerche sul Viaggio in Italia). He publishes and participates in national and international conferences. He is head of research projects with some Eastern European universities.
