Abstract
The research investigates the study ofthe New GeneraI Urban Planning of Rome in connection with Rome's agriculturalland and the deterioration of the Roman Countryside.
The study focuses on the main political and technical decisions, which have influenced town and country planning of the Rome City Council, through a summary of the foremost urban~building transformations. The reference period is from 1870 until the present days.
The study allows us to understand how certain choices have completely changed the characteristic appearance of the Roman Campagna, which up to the early 20th century stilI showed tbe beautiful landscapes that artists from many different backgrounds had described in their masterpieces.
The study analyses the lack of proper planning control of the last City PIan, which should have provided on the opportunity to create a "model" for Rome in coherence with the needs of the population.
The study conveys two different points of view conceming urban planning. Tbe first affirms the need of a proper, strategic and multifunctional planning for a new structure of the City; the other focuses on building construction and urban sprawl of Rome.
The research concludes with a technical-scientific survey of the Agricultural Land in Rome from 1961 to 2002.
