Abstract
The present study concern the use of plants in the province of Rieti through an historical research that wants to recover customs, traditions and beliefs connected with the local area in the contemporary period. The adopted method required not only a bibliographical research in several libraries and archives of the province, but also a collection of evidences from old people and farmers. The analysis is about different types of cultivations that, in the past, influenced socio-economic aspects, as well as popular uses of wild plants species in cooking, in medicine, in veterinary medicine, etc.
From the gathered information emerges a deepening study about exclusively curative treatment of woody plants, shrubs and suffruticose with uses that result, in more than one case, unknown to literature. Although over the years many traditions about plants have been lost, the biodiversity defense in all its forms, the recovery of species for the market and the trend of the so called “alternative medicine” have now led to the rebirth of a great interest about this subject. The research on wild natural species and cultivated species widespread in the past, might suggest a recovery finalized to a new use of them, even in the industrial field. It would be desirable to improve farmed areas based on the accurate choice of adequate species in order to allow a better exploitation of the potential and possibilities of our territory.
