Abstract
The case studies presented in this dissertation regard two Italian Renaissance panel paintings – the Madonna with Child and Two Saints from Palazzo Madama Museo Civico di Arte Antica (Torino, Italy) painted by Defendente Ferrari and dating back to around 1505-1510, and the Madonna della Tenda from Musei Reali Torino (MRT, Inv. 271, Torino, Italy) historically attributed to Raffaello Sanzio and subsequently recognized as a 16th-century copy after the Master. The scientific research on these artworks were carried out at the Centro per la Conservazione ed il Restauro dei Beni Culturali La Venaria Reale (Turin province, Italy) and it showed that multi-analytical approaches, analytical plans and anlytical strategies are fundamental to answering the issues that can arise during panel paintings' study, preservation, and conservation treatments. Among the most complex issues that arose during the study and conservation treatment of these paintings include the study of the internal structure of the wooden supports, the identification of localized overpaintings, the chemical characterization of the thin layers of varnish, original and not original, observed in cross section, and the understanding of some particular forms of degradation. All this information was aimed at supporting with scientific data the team of conservators responsible for designing and carrying out the conservation treatment of the two works. Furthermore, the research conducted has allowed us to reveal new aspects of the execution technique of the two paintings, such as the preparatory drawing, the engravings, the perspective lines of the setting and the vanishing point, as well as the possible tools used for their execution, and to delve deeper into the study of some technical expedients used by the artists in the creation of the two artworks. This research also reflected on the potential and limits of the analytical techniques available at the CCR. The questions that arose around the study and conservation treatment of these two artworks required launching eight scientific collaborations with various universities and national research institutions and became the opportunity to test state-of-the-art diagnostic methods. In all, in the two case studies, sixteen different methods were used, and the results of the research conducted resulted in the publication of three scientific articles: one in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, one in the Journal of Imaging, and one in the Journal of Cultural Heritage.
