Abstract
Medieval illuminated manuscripts – a peculiar product both for its form and as a polysemous medium - are here explored within the scope of possible alternatives to the traditional display modes (both for temporary and permanent displays) which inevitably impinge on their characteristic features.
The considerations which will follow are derived from historical data on the creation and the use of the manuscripts; these data are obtained through the examination of their significant social milieux and historical settings. The outward appearance of each specimen – format, writing, illumination – as well its content are studied in order to show the examination and study requirements of a manuscript.
Together with considerations on technical elements related to manuscript materials and on recognized international standards for the most appropriate conservation parameters, this work offers a critical analysis of some of the most recent exhibitions (from 1995 to present times) as well as alternative experiences for a direct observation of original specimens. Part of the work centres around the impact which new technologies have had on the observation, study and use of illuminated manuscripts. Indeed, thanks to the net new technologies have allowed a much larger number of users to view graphic reproductions and digital acquisitions of manuscripts.
In its conclusions this work highlights the need to maintain a close relationship with the original specimen, in order to put forward a display plan which may be in line with the complex nature of a written or illuminated manuscript and its specific communicative aims.
The present study would like to suggest practical hints for future displays which may involve, for various purposes, illuminated manuscripts and which intend to highlight their complex and structured nature.
