Abstract:

This research project was entirely devoted to recover plans of the local varieties of artichoke and pepper, giving attention to their culture and morphogenetic characterization.
The research focused on these two species because they are the most important in Campania. In the first phase of the work we have recovered the above-mentioned plants and prepared a set up for the characterization tests. For the artichoke, this staging took place directly at the local farms and also at the CRA-ORT experimental farms while pepper was allocated at the CRA-ORT experimental farm. As regards to the last case, we also identified and growed some pepper varieties registered in the Italian National Register of plants varieties used as variety models in the tests of distinguishability.
The morphophenotypic description of the artichoke varieties has been done by UPOV guidelines , while the pepper has been performed utilizing a guideline made by some index terms taken from CPVO protocol and others from Bioversity International (former IPGRI). A molecular characterization has been carried out for both species. By means of SSR and ISSR markers for the composite and only SSR markers for solanaceous. These surveys allowed to determine that seven out of the nine local varieties of artichoke analysed are included in the limits established by the National Plan on Biodiversity of agricultural interest. The only two exception are represented by the “Castellammare” type, that features a mix of three phenotypes inside the sample analysed, and “Capuanella olivastra Iorio” to which it was not possible to give a clear identity.
From the morphological point of view, the comparison of all the artichoke genotypes has shown a similarity among the varieties that only partially matches with the molecular evidences.
In regard to pepper instead, 12 of the 14 local varieties analysed resulted to be homogeneous, that is to say that they have an off-types number lower than the limit established by the National Plan on Biodiversity of agricultural interest. The only two varieties that displayed a mixture were “Cornetto Buccinese corto” and “Corno di Capra Controne Ferrante”.
With regard to the comparisons carried out among the commercial varieties nurtured as model samples, the only analogy observed is among the local variety Friariello and the commercial variety Friariello. All other comparisons underlined statistically significant differences for at least one character of interest.
Thanks to this work we have been able to collect useful information about a good number of native local varieties. The wish is that all the local varieties proved to be perfectly homogeneous can be included in the “Conservation Variety Catalogue” of Campania. For the others, it is expected that the undertaken study will be carried on, as it represents a material culture, and therefore, a common heritage.
