Title: eContent: tradizionale, semantico o 2.0?
Authors: Meschini, Federico
In 2006 Time Magazine celebrated as Man of the Year "You", thus indicating all the WorldWideWeb users that cooperated and helped in shaping the form of the new "Web 2.0". But what has been the evolution of the Web from the original project of Tim Berners-Lee, in the early nineties at CERN, to his current configuration? And what is the relationship between the Semantic Web, Berners-Lee's next vision, and Web 2.0? Are they totally unrelated or some form of cooperation is possible, and what could be the results of this interaction? Scientific and Academic publishing is aware of this technologies and is already using them in their applications, to deliver electronic contents in new and most pervasive ways. eContent is no more what it used to be, but while waiting to become semantic it has suddendly been upgraded to version 2.0.

Title: The Strange Case of Doctor Gibson and Mister Pynchon
Authors: Meschini, Federico

TMS - TEI Management Systems

Title: TMS - TEI Management Systems
Authors: Meschini, Federico
Abstract: The Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines, used for the electronic encoding of literary and linguistic texts and since 2001 based on the XML syntax, are constantly being more and more adopted by the different digitalization projects. As the number of digital texts and collections is growing, also the availability of software tools "TEI-aware" is increasing, both developed in academic and librarian contexts, and adapted from "hard" Information Technology frameworks.
The choice is now much wider than it was just a few years ago, but it could also cause some confusion in selecting the right tool, because each software has its own peculiarities, which should be evaluated and confronted against the characteristics of the texts being encoded and the general needs and aims of the project of which the digital library is part. What is the main aim of a project? It's the visualization one, with perhaps a multiple output feature? It's a general full-text research or there are also some form of advanced textual analysis? It is possible to combine all these aspect? And if somebody has already found a solution for our problems how can we find it over the net?
What this paper wants to analyze is the possibility of a classification of the actually available TEI Management Systems, using the Topic Maps technology, an ISO standard for the management and representation of knowledge.
A Topic Map is based on the definition of a general topic, the particular and real occurrences of that topic, and the associations between different topics, thus it can be the best way to obtain a complete classification, which will include the various aspects, from the most technical, concerning the programming languages used or the technical specification needed, to the functionalities of visualization, text research and analysis.

Scholarly editions: does form matter?

Title: Scholarly editions: does form matter?
Authors: Meschini, Federico
Abstract: Paper delivered during the Humanities Postgraduates Conference, held at De Montfort University the 31/10/2007. Textual Criticism and Computer Science are both disciplines which are at the same time theoretical and practical, where these two aspects have a mutual influence on each other. Their relationship has a long and established tradition, since starting from the sixties computer algorithms were created to help textual scholars in their editorial work. For a long time the computer has always been seen as a mere tool, with no theoretical or methodological implications for the humanist. But what happens when the electronic medium is the carrier of Textual Criticism’s investigations and results? What are the consequences? Currently always more and more projects decide to produce electronic scholarly editions, to go over the print edition limits. But what are the consequences of such a choice, and what is the best way for producing such kind of editions? In the nineteenth century the famous scholar Karl Lachmann, proposed his homonym method to produce a critical edition, which is composed by the recensio, collatio and emendatio steps which for electronic editing should be updated adding edition, how the edition is created, and conservatio, how it is preserved. Electronic scholarly editions are currently in a very dynamic state, with their number constantly growing. But their intellectual features challenge even the most advanced electronic publishing technologies with many implications on the semantic web vision. Moreover more than often they adopt a particular approach with the result of being architectural dysmorphic with each others. What this paper wants to address are the methodological and technological implications of creating a scholarly editions using the electronic medium, using both an empirical than a theoretical point of view, addressing their role as that of an important tile in the the larger mosaic of Digital Humanities and eScience for the Arts and the Humanities.

Authors: Meschini, Federico
This paper covers the main steps of its history, starting from the reasons behind its creation, mainly the great diffusion of the WorldWideWeb, and the relationship with its progenitor, SGML. The other technologies which compose the global scheme, such as stylesheets and query languages, are also presented, together with the relationship between XML and the other digital information paradigms, such as relational databases or formats used by Office Automation suites.

This paper illustrates the experience made at Tuscia University about both the creation and the administration of an institutional repository. Unitus DSpace, this is the name of the open archive, has been created by means of collaboration between academic staff and librarians, and has been in function since 2005. A particular attention has been given to doctoral thesis, upon which the work of librarians has been focused on, having a constant and active cooperation with the competent administrative staff. Other issues which have been handled are promotion of open access movement in the university, metadata standards, copyright, and more technical aspects. Next step is an analysis and review of the results so to constantly improve Unitus Dspace.

Title: Annotating digital libraries and electronic editions in a collaborative and semantic perspective
Authors: Barbera, Michele; Meschini, Federico; Morbidoni, Christian; Tomasi, Francesca
Abstract: The distinction between digital libraries and electronic editions is becom-ing more and more subtle. The practice of annotation represents a point of conver-gence of two only apparently separated worlds. The aim of this paper is to present a model of collaborative semantic annotation of texts (SemLib project), suggesting a system that find in Semantic Web and Linked Data the solution technologies for en-abling structured semantic annotation, also in the field of electronic editions in Digi-tal Humanities domain. The main purpose of SemLib is to develop an application so to make easy for developers the integration of annotation software in digital librar-ies, which are different both for technical implementations and managed contents, and provide to users, indifferently from their cultural backgrounds, a simple system which could be used as a front-end. We present, for this purpose, a final example of semantic annotation in a specific context: a digital edition of a literary text and the issues that an annotation task involves.
